First photos with new camera
During my xmas trip to Beechworth I broke my Ricoh GR III by slipping into a pool of water. It seemed ok for a while, but then started to fail, then after getting the repair place to look at it, basically it stopped working completely. Not to worry, I have insurance.
I was going to replace it with another GR III, I really liked its size and super sharp lens, but I did not like its flimsy feeling build quality, and constant reports of dust getting onto the sensor inside the sealed body. That would really annoy me. Then I found out about the Canon G1X Mark III. APS-C like the Ricoh, but with a zoom lens, and weather sealing. It is a bit bigger than the Ricoh but also has the viewfinder.
I would happily trade the viewfinder for smaller size, but am liking the zoom lense, and the weather sealing adds piece of mind. The perfect camera for me does not exist, yet.
Oh yeah, the gardens here are on the edge of central Melbourne, I walk here often since lockdowns started due to COVID.
This building is very reflective. The sky here is perhaps too blue. I have made an import preset in lightroom to sharpen the soft looking raw files from the Canon. They look super sharp once sharpened, I probably over do it.
Formerly busy food court now almost a ghost down due to lockdowns. Photo mainly taken doe to the banner. This is still my super bright sharp landscape preset unaltered, probably not the best raw processing option for this sort of photo.
Fully zoomed in to 45mm which i think is 67.5mm full frame equivalent. My last 3 cameras have had no zoom. The compression effect is useful for shots like this, more so for busy neon light streets which I will probably do with this camera soon.
Reflections and lots of green. I study the leaves for sharpening. Chromatic abberations in the top left (purple fringing). Will investigate.
This area was super green. Shadows boosted. Those rings of metal on the trees are to stop the possums from climbing them, a common feature in Australian parks.
Turned the corner and walking back into the sun now. The sun is shining through the orange windows of the church spire.
I think this looks great. It might be photo of the day except I need photo of the day to be landscape orientated or my website breaks.
This was not the best angle for the fountain, but it was the best angle for the buildings in the brackground. Camera has a 3 stop ND filter built in, I did not use it here but could have.
The camera also has optical stabilisation, in my tests on the wide end 1/2 a second exposures seem reliable, just like my Ricoh which had sensor based stabilisation.
My favourite Melbourne building, looks better from the front. Note the reflections near the bottom of it from the glass of other buildings.
Thoughts...
Seems pretty good so far. I like the zoom. I am happy with the sharpening. Colors are... vibrant, maybe too much.
